Abstract
This study is to examine the relationship between playfulness of mothers and emotional capabilities of their children. The subjects of the study were 202 children aged 4 to 5 enrolled in private day care centers located in Jeju Island and their mothers. For this study, we performed a multiple regression analysis using playfulness of the mother scale (cheerfulness, imagination, improvisation, and creativity) and emotional capabilities of the child scale (emotional expression, perception of self emotions, perception of others¡¯ emotions, empathy, emotional control, and emotional vocabulary). As a result, we found that all of the emotional capabilities of the child scale were influenced positively by cheerfulness and imagination of mothers. Specifically, empathy and emotional vocabulary were found to be positively influenced by cheerfulness of mothers and perception of self emotions and perception of others¡¯ emotions were influenced positively by cheerfulness and imagination and negatively by improvisation, while emotional control was not affected by playfulness of mothers. This indicates that if mothers interact with their children with a cheerful and imaginative attitude, development of child emotions is positively affected. However, if mothers interact with their children in an improvisational manner, then such interaction has a negative influence on development of child emotions.
